Why you need to have friends with dogs

Having friends with dogs is so important – and here’s why

When you get a dog, it is the most amazing thing in the world.

You’re overjoyed, and literally the only thing you talk about to your friends and family, is your fur-baby-puppy-child.

It may seem obvious, but right about this time, you need to start making friends with other dog owners-stat!

Dog owners get what you go through on a daily basis-and they care

Having a dog isn’t like having a gerbil. Yes, both are pets, but a dog needs your love and attention, and your legs moving out that door to take them for walks every day.

You need to dedicate time and energy to your puppy. Other dog owners will understand exactly what that means.

They also understand what it means to have a dog poo all over the carpets and rip apart your furniture- and they will listen your grievances with sincerest sympathy.

A night in with the dog is fun, and they will agree with you

Everyone has a different definition of a fun night, so this is not to say one is better than the other.

Many people would argue ‘staying in’ is lame, but dog owners love spending time with their pups. It’s hard to explain that to someone who disagrees, but who doesn’t own a dog.

When you have a dog-owner friend, they are totally down for a night of hanging out in the backyard with the dogs!

When you suggest a dog-friendly activity, they will always want to join

As a dog owner, I love to bring my dogs wherever they are welcome. This is especially true because of how few establishments in Canada allow dogs.

So, when I suggest a trip to the dog park or a long trail walk to a dog-owner friend, they are always happy to join.

Having a friend who knows your dog is really important

If you were ever to have an emergency situation, having a friend who knows your dog is really important.

Just like kids, you need emergency contacts in case you can’t get to them for whatever reason.

If your family lives out of town, you can feel comfortable calling your friend to check in on the pups.

Dogs respond well to people they’re familiar with and will be more at ease with a friend than a near stranger.

Most importantly, they won’t judge you for being OBSESSED with your dog

This is a less important trait, but worth mentioning. Dog owners totally understand when other dog owners speak in strange voices to their dogs. And when we imitate our dogs, gushing over them whenever we get the chance.

There’s also some great communities you can join on Facebook if you love your pups (Bunz Pet Zone, Toronto Dogs, you name it)!
